Active Fun Day
First Holy Communion
On the 15th of May 2010 Ms McHales’ and Ms Coppingers’ second class both celebrated their First Holy Communion along with Ms Conlons’ class from the French school. Ms Duffy accompanied by Ms de Frein led the 4th class girls in the choir for the big occasion. The day was a huge success.
On Monday 17th of May we began our International celebrations. The concert opened with Ms O’ Shea’s Italian class accompanied by all the Senior Infants singing a few Italian songs. Ms Bracken’s senior infant class then entertained us with an old Scottish song provided by Grace Bradley’s mum who originates from Scotland.
The French School also got involved in our International concert and we were treated to a few French songs composed and sung by them and their teacher. Our 4th, 5th and 6th classes performed French songs they had learnt with their French teachers during the year. Ms Caffrey, Ms Kelly and Ms Cassen did a terrific job preparing their classes for the concert.
Our visiting Spanish students also got involved in the show and performed ‘The Macerna’ for the school. The concert ended with the whole school singing ‘This world is your world, this world is my world’. It was a great success and a great way to build up to our International Day celebrations. Thanks to Ms Glennon for co-ordinating the concert and Ms Caffrey, Ms Kelly and Ms Cassen , Ms O Shea and Ms Foy for getting involved in its organization.

On Tuesday 18th of May International Day finally arrived. We transformed the tunnel area into a colourful international bazaar full of arts, crafts and food from different countries. Every child in the school was given a passport and had to get their passport stamped from the various different countries. 5th and 6th class along with some volunteer parents took charge of the different stalls decorating and furnishing them with crafts as well as stamping the passports for the event.
The whole day was a huge success. We would like to thank all the parents who got involved in the run up to the event donating their time and effort to the day and also those parents who contributed on the day by bringing in food and goods from different countries. A huge thank you also to Bevin O’ Shea who designed our terrific International Day poster which we displayed around the school. The success of our festival was largely due to the huge support it received throughout the school from staff, pupils, parents and teachers.

International Day 2010
Last year Mrs Doran, Mrs Carthy and a team of enthusiastic parents
organized and ran a very successful ‘International Day’ in our school.
It was a celebration of the diverse cultures and languages represented
in Hollypark. Stalls of different countries were set up with crafts and
specialities from these countries to be sampled. It was a fantastic,
educational day.
This year we would
like to run another ‘International Day’ and we are looking for parents
to volunteer to help out organizing this event. If you would like to
become involved in our International Day Celebrations which take place
on Tuesday 18th of May 2010, please contact
Ms Foy directly in Room 19 (upstairs) or send Ms Foy an email
This
year at the 19th annual Credit Union Quiz
Hollypark Girls’ School was represented by 3 teams. The
quiz took place in St Laurence’s College in
Loughlinstown on Friday 29th of January. Our
3 teams did brilliantly and it was a very close
competition.
All
the girls involved put a lot of time and effort in
preparing for the big day. The 3 sixth class teachers Ms
Carey, Ms Candon and Ms Burns-Dooley also helped the
girls tremendously get ready for the Quiz.
Ellen Doyle, Ciara Begley,
Sarah Nea and Ciara Kelly made up one of the teams.
Their hard work and dedication was impressive.
Another of our teams made up
of Sorcha Whooley, Sinead Ellison, Nicola Bennett and
Hannah McCarthy had the audience on the edge of their
seats as they entered a tie-breaker with a team from
Hollypark Boys’ National School to determine second
place. Unfortunately it didn’t go in the girls favour!
Although they came an impressive third in the Quiz which
is of course, a great achievement.
And finally Laura Hamill,
Cathy Murphy, Eva Fenn and Anna Caffrey must be
congratulated for achieving first place. Well Done
Girls!! They will go through to the next round which
will be held in the R.D.S. next month. Best of Luck
girls and of course we will be there cheering you on!!

Chinese New Year is
the most important of the traditional Chinese
holidays. It is commonly called "Lunar New Year",
because it is based on the lunisolar Chinese
calendar. The festival traditionally begins on the
first day of the first month in the Chinese calendar
and ends on the 15th; this day is called Lantern
Festival. Chinese New Year's Eve is known as chú xī.
It literally means "Year-pass Eve". 2010 is the year
of the Tiger.
Australia Day, January
26, is the biggest day of celebration in Australia and
is observed as a public holiday in all states and
territories. On Australia Day, Australians come together
as a nation celebrate what's great about Australia and
being Australian.

Christmas Art
Look at all the fabulous Christmas Art that is on display around our school. Our 5th class Ms Cashman's designed and created our wonderful crib which is on display in the foyer. Well done to all the classes for brightening up our corridors with such wonderful art.
This year the whole school went to the pantomime on the 3rd of December. Hollypark Girls' School nearly filled the whole Gaeity theatre. The girls were all impressed by the wonderful performance of Jack and Beanstalk and the singing was amazing. Junior infants came to the pantomime for the first time this year and they really enjoyed the trip.
Junior infants, Senior infants and first class all performed their nativity plays in the last few weeks for their parents and fellow pupils. The teachers all did a wonderful job as all the plays were of a very high standard and very entertaining. Well done to all the classes involved.
In October we celebrated the Indian festival Diwali. This festival celebrates the triumph of good over evil; in Hindi, Diwali means “festival of lights,” and people light rows of lights to commemorate heroic figures in Indian mythology who triumphed over the forces of evil. Diwali is also a propitious time for new endeavors, and many people clean their homes and open all their windows and doors to welcome luck and good fortune during Diwali. The exchange of gifts is also traditional during this holiday, and many people host dinners and Diwali parties.
In November we celebrated Thanksgiving day in America. Thanksgiving Day is a harvest festival celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada. Traditionally, Thanksgiving is associated with giving thanks to God for the harvest and expressing gratitude.
Our Senior team in Hollypark played in the Comhar Linn finals on Saturday 12th of December in Croke Park. They played a fine game on Saturday, unfortunately they didn't get the result they hoped for but they can be very proud of their achievements. All the staff, pupils and parents in Hollypark certainly are! Well done girls!
extract from The Evening Herald dated Monday 14th of December
...Nothing could match the drama in Comhar Linn final. Foxrock's Hollypark were leading by two points as the game crept into injury time. The Navan road side lept at it. The former Dublin hurler, John Murphy, was encouraging their every stroke.
The ball broke to Rebecca Keating and her effort found glory. It was the last shot of the game. It was a remarkable conclusion. Coaching Hollypark was Marla Candon, who led the Underdogs to New York and who inspired Foxrock-Cabinteely to All-Ireland glory.
She hid her disappointment to congratulate every one of the Mary Help of Christians team, who included their inspirational midfielder Aoibheann Lynch. Hollypark weren't short of heroes. Lauren McDonagh was brillliant at the back. Carla McDonagh also impressed. But they all did. It was cruel way to lose, but they'll have good days again. Especially with Captain Candon on the bridge.....
